Newsletter Autumn 2012
After the wettest summer on record we are hoping that the autumn will bring an Indian summer for us all to enjoy. What we have to remember, though, is that the winter months will soon be upon us and the dreaded “Flu” season will soon be here.
The flu immunisation (flu jab) gives excellent protection against seasonal flu and lasts for one year. It does not prevent other viral infections which can cause coughs, colds and flu-like illnesses. It protects only against the particular flu virus that is expected in the coming winter. We shall be running our “Flu Clinics” once again in early October and will be vaccinating people with the following criteria:
* If you are aged 65 and over as at 31.3.2013 – or if you are under 65 and have any of the following:-
* Chronic (ongoing) lung diseases i.e. bronchitis, emphysema, cystic fibrosis and severe asthma.
* Chronic heart disease i.e. angina, heart failure or have had a heart attack
* Serious kidney or liver disease
* Diabetes
* A poor immune system i.e. if you are receiving chemotherapy or steroid treatment, have HIV/Aids or if you have had your spleen removed
* Certain serious diseases of the nervous system such as multiple sclerosis or have had a stroke in the past
* Live in a nursing home or other long-stay residential care accommodation
* Pregnant women and also any child who has previously been admitted to hospital with a chest infection should also have a flu jab.
You should also be immunised if you are the main carer for an elderly/disabled person or you are staff involved in direct patient care (including nursing and care homes) although you may be offered a flu jab by your employer
You should not have the flu jab if you have a severe allergy to eggs or have had a severe reaction in the past. Your GP will be able to advise you on this.
Side Effects: You may have a temporary mild soreness at the injection site and sometimes it can cause a mild fever and slight muscle aches for a day or two. This soon settles and does not lead to flu.
The “Open Clinics” will be from 8th October – 2nd November.
You do not need to make an appointment, just turn up on the day as detailed below and our practice nurses will be happy to give you a quick vaccination which should ensure that you are covered for the coming season. If you are unable to attend the clinics, please contact our Receptionists to make an appointment with our Practice Nurse. Alternatively, for those that aren’t able to make the week day sessions there is a “By Appointment Only” Clinic at Wansford on Saturday mornings – 13th, 20th, 27th October and 3rdNovember.
Wansford: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 2.15pm – 3.30pm
(Surnames beginning A – M 2.15 – 2.45pm, Surnames beginning N – Z 2.45 – 3.30pm)
Kings Cliffe: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 11.15am – 12.15pm
(Surnames beginning A –M 11.15 – 11.45 am, Surnames beginning N – Z 11.45 – 12.15pm)
It is also imperative that with the Christmas break approaching that you order any repeat prescriptions in plenty of time. The surgery will only be closed on Tuesday 25 December and Wednesday 26 December so there is no need to panic buy! The best way to order is to use the on-line system, speak to our receptionists for full details, or take your Repeat Prescription script direct to the Pharmacy. You can also ring our Repeats Clerk on 01780 783994, Monday to Friday 9.00 – 12.00, who will order for you, but at this very busy time of year please ensure that you order at least one week in advance if you know that you are going to need your medication over the Christmas period. Our staff here will certainly appreciate your consideration over this!
You may not be aware that you can order prescriptions or make appointments on-line. If you would like to take advantage of this system, please call in to our main reception at Wansford bringing some ID with you i.e. passport or utility bill. You will then be issued with an Access Code and PIN which will enable you to set up an account on-line. Each member of your family will have a separate PIN and you will need to set up an individual account for each person.
We continue to run a Saturday morning surgery from 9am to 12.00. This is NOT pre-bookable but is available as an emergency-only service. If you urgently need to be seen by a doctor then please ring the surgery on 01780 782342 at 9am and every effort will be made to make an appointment for you. We do not have a nursing team present on Saturday mornings. The pharmacy is open from 9am to 1pm.
Medication Reviews. You may have been advised by the pharmacy recently that you are due to have a review of your medication. Our Community Practitioners, Julie Siggee and Sara-Jane Turner have taken over the management of the reviews and patients are now given an appointment for a telephone consultation with them. After they have had a brief discussion with you they will then advise whether you need a follow-up blood test or whether you need to discuss your medication further with a GP and they will make any necessary appointments for you. By using this system it leaves the doctors with more appointments free to accommodate those patients with complex medical issues.
FREE NHS Health Check – Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes or kidney disease. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented. We shall shortly be inviting patients to come in to the surgery and we would advise that you take advantage of this FREE health check so that you will be better prepared for the future and be able to take steps to maintain or improve your health.
In our Summer Newsletter we asked for more Volunteer Drivers. We are really quite desperate for volunteers to come forward to help those patients who find it difficult to get to appointments at the surgery or in some instances, the hospital. A small remuneration is paid direct to you by the patient. Please contact the reception staff at Wansford for more information, we would be very grateful indeed to receive your call.

Notice to patients:July 2012
Further to discussions that have taken place at our Patient Participation Group (PPG) meetings over the last year or so, and at which time we have discussed the benefits of our being part of the Borderline group of practices, we have now, as part of the Government’s new Health and Social Care Bill, applied and been given the authorisation to re-align ourselves with the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Clinical Commissioning Group. This will have potential advantages for our patients in that we will be able to access more local Community Care Pathways/Services as well as those associated with Peterborough City Hospital.
During this transition year, as we have become aligned to Borderline Local Commissioning Group, representatives from Communicare, our own Patient Participation Group, have been actively attending meetings and discussions with representatives from the other Patient Participation Groups within this new Local Commissioning Group. Borderline sits under the umbrella of the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Core Commissioning Group.
This authorisation will be a topic of discussion at our next PPG meeting to be held on the evening of Wednesday 4th July, 6.30pm at the Wansford Surgery, if any of our patients have any concerns, or would like to find out more about what this will mean for our patients, Dr Takhar will be in attendance on the evening. Alternatively, if you are not able to make that meeting we are happy for you to call our Practice Manager, Denise Roberts, to discuss this.
